About Mautner Project Client Services Program

Mautner Project Client Services Program supports women who partner with women, including lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and their caregivers and families, affected by cancer, bereavement, and other life crises.

Who is eligible to receive services?

We will work with any LBT-identified woman who is facing serious illness, caring for a loved one, or coping with grief. We also support the caregivers and families of our clients.

Who are your volunteers?

Everyone! We work to recruit a diverse group of caring people who represent many communities and walks of life. Many of our volunteers have been touched by cancer or loss in some way, and want to share their experiences with others. All volunteers must sign a confidentiality form, attend training, and complete a background check.

What services are offered?

Each client is connected with a Care Team made up of Mautner Project staff and volunteers who provide practical as well as emotional support from pre-diagnosis to one year post-treatment. Our program is flexible to meet the unique needs of each client, from patient advocacy to hospital visits to yard work to help with insurance paperwork.

Wow! Is there anything you don’t do?

Mautner Project does not provide medical care, legal services, individual therapy, or direct financial support. Instead, we refer clients to local and national partner organizations to meet such needs, and are often able to help clients apply for the appropriate programs.

Where do you provide direct services?

Our volunteers primarily serve women and families in the Washington DC metropolitan area. Some of our services, such as provider referral, phone support, and online support groups are available to the LGBT community nationwide.

How many clients do you typically serve?

Mautner Project works with an average of 12-25 clients per month, including both short-term navigation services and long-term family support.

I would like to become a client. What should I do next?

Contact the Director of Client Services at Mautner Project for more information. Together, we’ll discuss how our program might meet your needs, and schedule a home visit to complete a brief intake interview. We will then work to connect you with a Care Team of volunteers in your area, who will work with you and your support network to make sure that you have the care you need, throughout your treatment and recovery process.
