PROGRAMS
Family Services
If a lesbian/wpw with cancer, her partner, or caregivers chooses to participate
in our Family Coordination Program, a Coordinator will be assigned to
assess the clients needs and to provide both emotion and practical support
services. This is accomplished through the Family Coordinator’s ability
to access the Mautner Project’s Direct Services Volunteers. Together,
the Family Coordinator and the Direct Services Volunteers form a team
of caring individuals that are able to provide support to the client(s)
being served. Some of the services provided include, but are not limited
to, hospital visits, rides to appointments, home visits, housekeeping,
gardening, pet care, laundry, meal preparation and help with confusing
medical bills or insurance problems.

include:
- A resource center filled with books, pamphlets, magazines, audiotapes, videotapes, hats, and medical equipment.
- National referral information for lesbian sensitive services such as lawyers, doctors, therapist, and financial assistance.

Outreach and Education
The Mautner Project works to keep lesbians informed and in charge of their own health. It offers:
- Regular education programs on Gynecological Cancers, HRT and the connection to cancer, Alternative Therapies, Emergency Medical Documents and much, much more.
- A Resource Center located in downtown Washington, D.C. with extensive information about cancer and cancer treatments.
- Outreach to doctors, nurses, oncology social workers, and other health care providers to educate them on the cancer risks of lesbians and the special concerns of lesbians and their partners.
Advocacy
The Mautner Project recognizes that cancer is not just a personal trauma but a political issue.
The Project is a founding member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition, the grassroots advocacy organization that is leading the campaign for increased research funding for breast cancer. The Project also helped to found the National Coalition of Feminist and Lesbian Cancer Projects and serves as a model for lesbian health programs across the country.
Finally, the Project is collaborating on research that may demonstrate a higher incidence of cancer among lesbians and is working to see that breast cancer is recognized as an epidemic.
Heed the Call
When bills which directly affect women's cancer issues and women's health issues are before the Congress, the Mautner Project will expand our advocacy to include monitoring this legislation and issuing calls for action on bills that we believe need our support. We firmly believe that together our voice has power. We hope you will join us by enrolling in our Heed the Call e-mail service.
Subscribing to Heed the Call will alert you through your e-mail whenever such a bill is introduced in Congress. E-mail us at mautner@mautnerproject.org to subscribe (or unsubscribe) your email address.
