Whole Grains

Try to eat whole grains. Fad low-carb diets are not necessarily a healthy lifestyle, and carbs aren’t all bad for you! However, whole grains provide a wealth of protein, fiber, and nutrients not present in processed grains. They also release sugar into your bloodstream more slowly, preventing both that familiar post-lunch “slump” and health issues like diabetes and heart disease! Here are some easy ways to incorporate whole grains into your diet:

    • Buy whole grain (like whole wheat) bread instead of white bread. There are a lot of varieties out there, so it’s likely you’ll find one you like!
    • If you like hot cereal, have oatmeal for breakfast! It’s cheaper and healthier if you buy a jar of plain oats rather than flavored packets, but they both include whole grains. If you make your own, try making it with a little low-fat milk for added calcium and protein; or add fresh or dried fruit as a tasty way to work in some produce. If hot cereal isn’t your favorite, many dry cereals are now made with whole grains as well.
    • If you like pasta, try buying whole grain pasta. It’s just as easy to cook, tastier, and better for you.
    • Try making muffins and other baked goods with whole grains. Oats and whole wheat flour can easily be used in oatmeal cookies or muffins!
