gavelIn The News: Nondiscrimination in California Health Care!

On Monday, the California State Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the state's nondiscrimination law extended to the medical profession. The decision stemmed from a lawsuit filed by Guadalupe "Lupita" Benitez, whose physicians refused her a standard fertility treatment based on her sexual orientation. Her Christian doctors claimed that their refusal to provide care was because she was unmarried and that it was protected under First Amendment freedom of religion. The ruling will bar doctors in California from refusing medical treatment to gay men or lesbians because of their religious beliefs. The Mautner Project congratulates Ms. Benitez and Lambda Legal, who advocated on her behalf. Hopefully, the rest of the country will soon follow in requiring health care providers to treat all of their patients equally and with respect.
