Women's Health Week

National Women's Health Week is May 11-17!
Celebrate National Women's Health Week May 11-17 by celebrating yourself! Taking care of yourself is so important to allowing you to do all the things you love - whether that's dancing the night away with your best girl, caring for your children, working hard,

or spending time with loved ones. Plus, you'll feel better! During this week, take the time to do something for yourself. Here are some ideas:

  • Make an appointment for your annual mammogram.
  • Take a walk!
  • Be a designated driver.
  • Join an LGBT-friendly sports team with a friend.
  • Consider signing up for the WOMAN Challenge, a physical activity challenge for better health - and get moving on a virtual trek across the country! Learn more here.

Tell us what you've done to celebrate your health, and we'll feature it in an upcoming newsletter! Just email Sara Jaye at ssanford@mautnerproject.org!

In Memory: Calpernia Miller

We mourn the passing of Calpernia Miller, who will be missed and remembered by many as a kind, supportive, and wonderful friend. She volunteered for many years with both the Lesbian Services Program and the Black Lesbian Support Group. A funeral will be held Saturday, April 19, at Unity Fellowship Church, 1226 Vermont Ave. NW. The viewing will begin at 10:00 am, and the service will begin at 11:00 am. If you would like to donate food for the Repasse, please contact Charlene Bradshaw at (240) 413-5815 or Brenda at (202) 584-0358. To donate monetarily, please contact Carmen Ramos at (202) 723-5744. The Mautner Project improves the health of lesbians, bisexual, and transgender women who partner with women, and their families, through advocacy, education, research, and direct service. We envision a healthcare system that is guided by social justice and responsive to the needs of all people.

In the News

Recent studies, including one done by Harvard University, have confirmed the link between alcohol consumption and an increased risk for breast cancer. The more you drink, the more your risk increases. For example, drinking two or more drinks a day can increase risk 30%-40%. Read more in the Washington Post here. Because lesbian and bisexual women have higher rates of alcohol consumption than the general population, this is news is especially important for us! Remember to do your monthly breast self-exam and your annual mammogram.

A new rule in North Carolina allows same-sex partners visitation rights in hospitals across the state. While the new rule does not include medical decision making, it is a big step in the right direction. Learn more here.
