Take Action TODAY!

Shortly after groundbreaking human rights protections for the District of Columbia's transgender citizens went into effect, the Office of Human Rights proposed rules that would undermine these significant advances! Specifically, district agencies would be exempted from following the nondiscrimination law for individuals in their custody, such as youth in foster care or anybody arrested. A provision that would label single-stall bathrooms as gender-neutral would also be eliminated under the proposed rules.

Time for comments is running out, so sign the petition today! Visit the DC Trans Coalition to learn more.

Masha Gessen, "Blood Matters: From Inherited Illness to Designer Babies, How the World and I Found Ourselves in the Future of the Gene"
Wednesday, September 24, 6:00 PM
Following the death of her mother from Breast Cancer, Masha Gessen underwent genetic testing which revealed that she had a mutation that predisposed her to ovarian and breast cancer. Examining the way genetic information is shaping the decisions we make, Blood Matters is a much-needed field guide to this unfamiliar (and unsettling) territory. Part of the DC Jewish Community Center's Literary Festival, cosponsors of this event include the Mautner Project and the DCJCC's Stuart S. Kurlander Program for Gay and Lesbian Outreach and Engagement, among others. For more information or tickets, click here.

Save the Date! The 6th Annual LGBTQ Anti-Tobacco Summit will take place on September 22 and 23, 2008, in Kansas City, MO. The summit will offer opportunities to get oriented about LGBT tobacco control; learn LGBT tobacco best practices from across the country as well as best research strategies; find out what every state, county, and city should be doing now; share your lessons learned; and network with state officials and leaders in the field of LGBT tobacco. Scholarships are available for youth and adults. For more information or to help with planning, email lgbttobacco@gmail.com, or visit our website at http://lgbttobacco.googlepages.com/2008.

The Mautner Project improves the health of lesbians, bisexual, and transgender women who partner with women, and their families, through advocacy, education, research, and direct service. We envision a healthcare system that is guided by social justice and responsive to the needs of all people.
