Lesbian Health 101

How is lesbian health different from general women’s health?
Keep in mind that as a woman, you may be affected by breast and cervical cancer, heart disease, and the many other health issues that effect all women. Smoking, obesity, and alcohol consumption may increase your risk of developing certain health problems. Take charge of your health and wellness!

As a woman who partners with women, you may face significant barriers to good health care. Though many providers seek out training from the Mautner Project and other organizations on how to better serve LGBT patients, not all providers provide culturally competent care to women who partner with women. You may have experienced discrimination from a medical provider in the past, and may now avoid or delay going to the doctor for fear of a repeat experience. You may not be covered under your partner’s insurance and cannot afford care. Know that you are not alone, and that your experiences are valid.

As a lesbian or other woman who partners with women, what can you do to take charge of your health?
Take care of yourself. Eat healthy and exercise. Use alcohol in moderation and quit smoking. Find a medical provider that you trust and have regular checkups.
