Indiana Hospital Says No Transgender Patients Allowed (8/2/2010)
Erin Vaught made a trip to the emergency room at Ball Memorial Hospital in Centeral Indiana on July 18th. She came in coughing up blood and was expecting treatment for a lung condition. Instead of receiving appropriate medical treatment, Vaught was subject to ridiculing by hsopital staff and was denied treatment, all because she's transgender. Read more...

Lesbian activists, writers and organizers were at the heart of the women’s movement that thrived in the 1960s and 70s. Lesbians worked tirelessly for the rights of all women, including the right to abortion and for publicly funded childcare – issues not at the forefront of lesbians’ needs. But those same lesbians were frequently stigmatized within the movement: In 1969 Betty Friedan famously labeled us “the lavender menace” and didn’t renounce that point of view until 1977. JACR - The new recommendations from the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) on breast cancer screening, published in the January issue of the Journal of the American College of Radiology (JACR), state that breast cancer screening should begin at age 40 and earlier in high-risk patients. The recommendations also suggest appropriate utilization of medical imaging modalities such as mammography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound for breast cancer screening. It is undisputed that mammograms help save lives. The questions raised by the new recommendations made by United States Preventive Services Task Force --- and immediately rejected by the American Cancer Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists -- are about timing (to start at age 40 or 50?), and whether they save enough lives of women in their 40s to warrant the expense, the risk of unnecessary procedures, and the anxieties associated with having a mammogram and learning its results. Zuna Institute Mailing List - Simone Bell won her run-off race for District 58 in the State of Georgia. Atlanta voters turned out in record numbers to support 'Bell' to win a seat in the Georgia General Assembly. She becomes the second openly LGBT member of the Georgia State House, joining Rep.
